Being woke up at silly o’clock, I was actually sleeping for a change, I thought I would ask my old friend Google What exactly is Hump Day?, it is a term i have used many times in the past, but what is its actual meaning?, and when was the term hump day 1st used?.
Here is what i found courtesy of google.
Wednesday is the day of the week between Tuesday and Thursday. According to international standard ISO 8601 it is the third day of the week. In countries that have Friday as their holiday and in the Islamic calendar, Wednesday would be the fifth day of the week.
noun INFORMAL NORTH AMERICAN Wednesday, regarded as the midpoint of a typical working week.”it’s hump day and perhaps the toughest day of the week for you”
The term alludes to the fact that Wednesday is the middle of the work week, meaning that one has made it “over the hump” towards the weekend
Hump day is an idiom that means Wednesday, a day of the week. The term hump day first appeared in the 1960s in North America, most probably in business offices. Hump day is based on the idea that the work week is a mountain one must climb. The general office work week is Monday through Friday, consisting of five days
The concept of the middle of the week as ‘hump day‘ was around in business since the early 80’s to my recollection. After Wednesday, or more precisely at 12 Noon/ after lunch, the week was seen as half over. Things were all… As a phrase, ‘over the Hump‘ came out of the Second World War, China-Burma-India Theater.
The expression may have been in use in the 1940s
the name Wednesday actually derives from two mighty but distinct gods. The Old English word for Wednesday indicates that the day was named for the Germanic god Woden. In Romance languages, the name is derived from the Roman god Mercury. (For example, Wednesday is mercredi in French and miercuri in Romanian.)
In my conclusion: The term Hump Day began way before i was born or probably even way before i was even thought of. So i just thought i would share with you this pointless bit of information, while i sip my coffee and try to wake up a bit.
