Portion Distortion (Mind Games?)

What is Portion Distortion?

You will read lots of things on the internet about portion control, so this is just a quick note on what it means to me.

One of the things i have learnt about while embarking on my lifestyle journey was my portion size, gosh it was huge, i just had to fill my plate as it looked so empty, hence that meant i was probably eating twice as much as i needed, and with being told eat everything on your plate as i had from a child i just naturally carried it on into adult hood, but what i didn’t notice was that as i got older my plate size also got bigger and bigger, along with my tum, hips, rear and just about everywhere else.

How did i combat my growing portions? i rummaged around and found an old plate ( the blue striped one in the photograph) and did a little experiment, the photographs are quite explanatory.

The white plate above was my normal serving plate, as you can see the plate doesn’t look very full, there just isn’t enough food on it to fill me…. That is what the plate is telling me, also this is a measured/weighed portion of food for my lunch and is ample enough for me to eat, but the plate has left the food distorted i.e. I’m not going to be satisfied no way is there enough to eat i’ll starve until dinner time.

Now take a look at the next photograph below, that is exactly the same amount of food as on the plate above, (I took the food from the above plate and put it onto the blue plate).

Can you see the difference? on the blue plate you can see that it is full and how it tricks the mind into thinking wow there is a beep load of food on here how am i going to manage it all?.

By using a smaller plate i am finding that sometimes i don’t always finish my meal as my mind is now reading that there is more than enough on this plate for me..

If you give this plate swapping ago let me know how it goes.
